Only in America could a penny-a-word hack scifi writer get away with that. I mean Lovecraft created an entire cosmology, but he never intended for it to be taken seriously; the man was an absolute materialist and an atheist.

There was a good article I read (which I think lead to a book, IIRC) about how Lovecraft’s writings ultimately influenced that whole “ancient astronauts” woowoo. I have little doubt Lovecraft would’ve found that exceedingly amusing.

Even though they admit men treated them like shit throughout their lives, they still insist we are evil and that is from the Qu’ran *rollseyes*

Now do I think some Muslim men are assholes who treat women like shit? Absolutely, and I have never shied away from criticizing them for it.

But is that exclusive to Muslim men? Fuck no. But men like myself have to think twice before we act when we’re around women, and that’s amplified by the fact that I’m a brown-skinned Muslim male so I feel A LOT more pressure than others.

The “Antifa” group are right wingers, but they didn’t actually put up the banner:

There were also mixed signals over who had hung the banner. A group calling itself “Boston Antifa” had quickly claimed responsibility on social media, but many have pegged their accounts as a parody of the larger antifascist movement.

I’m surprised Daily Kos hasn’t corrected this.

BTW, it turns out that was just one of the banners hung. Here’s the other one.

I went to about half a dozen optical shops looking at frames. It’s hard to make choices when there are so many to choose from and not one of them is jumping out as ‘the one’. I finally went back the the third place to re-compare what I’d seen, and the frames I’d tried there finally felt like the best choice, but then I changed my mind about the color.

It’s hard to choose frames when you’re vision goes fuzzy without corrective lenses. I tried taking selfies with a couple frames so that I could put my glasses back on and see what they look like, but I always look like crap in selfies. I tend to look best from about two miles away.

I went to about half a dozen optical shops looking at frames.

I’d have to cover an area the size of your state to do that.

One word: Haskell.
Another word: Python.

There are languages where alignment is very important, and is part of the language.

What I ran into recently that’s really annoying is that makefiles require you to use tabs to indicate nesting.

a few years ago i asked some younger coders what the differences were btw php and python. the answer: python is cool!

oh, ok

seriously now that i have become pythonisticated i do appreciate the idea of a language that values aethetics and spareness

The trailer for the new Absurd comedy about Stalin - The Death of Stalin - was reviewed by The BBC the other day. bbc.com

Shot before Trump became US president, The Death of Stalin is one of many films to arrive in a global landscape different from what their creators might have expected. There is a new resonance when Khrushchev talks about the importance of telling the right story whether it is true or not. “This is how people get killed, when their stories don’t fit,” he says. It is possible to see Beria as a Putin stand in. But the film’s humour accommodates any political opinion. It is one of Iannucci’s most consistent, convincing tropes that at various times everyone in power seems idiotic.

My experience was that it was always a lot of work to chase a Catholic girl but the ummm “reward” was well worth the effort. Especially the well educated parochial schooled ones whom you could have really good conversations with as well.

My experience was literally 50/50.

But in the end, none of them were Mrs. FBW. She’s my Kryptonite, the only woman that other women couldn’t make me stop thinking about.

And in the end, that’s what love boils down to, when you’ve found that person who, no matter what is going on around you or in your life, all he/she has to do is touch you and whisper quietly in your ear and the whole world disappears.

Mrs. FBW has veto rights, because I have little sense of style. That, and they always want you to choose right after they dilate your goddam pupils and you can’t see worth a damn.

“…Trying to follow their logic is whiplash-inducing because deep down, there is no logic, only, to quote numerous conservative commentators, a list of petty grievances and sense of wounded pride, informed by perpetually outraged right-wing talking heads lying to them about liberals coming for their guns, money, and property. And the very fact that trying to grasp this naked, self-destructive nihilism is maddening to liberals is a great source of joy to Trumpists.
